This great infographic  (@AVSportSci) is looking at how accurately orthopaedic surgeons can predict whether you need to get physiotherapy or surgery following a degenerative meniscal tear.

The main result here is that they simply CANNOT (50% chance).

So what does this mean in practice?

Well quite simply, unless you are under 45 year-old and your knee is showing signs of locking, surgeons (in this study) do not know if you would benefit more from an operation or get physio.

And, since a lot of studies have now showed that degenerative meniscal tears treated by physiotherapy (only) tend to do better than after an operation,

Then maybe it is simply better to start with physio….
